That's because the rates of return that investors need from any kind of investment are directly tied to the risk-free rate that they can earn from government securities. So if the government rate rises, the prices of all other investments must adjust downward, to a level that brings their expected rates of return into line.
Conversely, if government interest rates fall, the move pushes the prices of all other investments upward. During recessions, corporate profit margins shrink, and during economic growth periods, corporate profit margins expand. However, long-term growth of corporate profitability is close to long-term economic growth.

Market Valuations Over the long run, stock market valuation reverts to its mean. A higher current valuation certainly correlates with lower long-term returns in the future.
On the other hand, a lower current valuation level correlates with a higher long-term return. The total market valuation is measured by the ratio of total market cap TMC to GNP -- the equation representing Warren Buffett's "best single measure". This ratio since is shown in the second chart to the right.
The market went from extremely undervalued in to extremely overvalued in For our present purposes, one substitutes equally as well for the other. The Sources of Investment Returns The returns of investing in an individual stock or in the entire stock market are determined by these three factors: 1.
Business growth If we look at a particular business, the value of the business is determined by how much money this business can make. The growth in the value of the business comes from the growth of the earnings of the business growth.
This growth in the business value is reflected as the price appreciation of the company stock if the market recognizes the value, which it does, eventually. If we look at the overall economy, the growth in the value of the entire stock market comes from the growth of corporate earnings. As we discussed above, over thelong term, corporate earnings grow as fast as the economy itself.
Dividends Dividends are an important portion of the investment return. Dividends come from the cash earning of a business. Everything equal, a higher dividend payout ratio, in principle, should result in a lower growth rate. Therefore, if a company pays out dividends while still growing earnings, the dividend is an additional return for the shareholders besides the appreciation of the business value.Total return, when measuring performance, is the actual rate of return of an investment or a pool of investments over a given evaluation period.
Total return includes interest, capital gainsdividends and distributions realized over a given period of time. Total return accounts for two categories of return: income including interest paid by fixed-income investments, distributions or dividends and capital appreciationrepresenting the change in the market price of an asset.
Total return is the amount of value an investor earns from a security over a specific period, typically one year, when all distributions are reinvested. Total return is expressed as a percentage of the amount invested.
The investor's total return is Some of the best dividend stocks have small growth potential and produce small capital gains.

Even though the company entered a space where other marketplaces where already established with a large scale and strong indirect network effects, Toptal managed to grow faster than the market and establish a successful platform. This blog post explores the dynamics of how TopTal managed to compete effectively.
Online staffing is an industry that has been growing fast in the last decade. The improvements in communication and collaboration technologies combined with the increasing willingness of millennials to work on their own terms has fueled this growth.
Companies benefit by getting access to specific specialized skills on demand, and freelancers get the flexibility to manage their own workload and access work opportunities not available in their local geography.
By the time Toptal was founded incompeting platforms such as Elance and oDesk were already respectively 11 and 7 years old, which meant that they had already established strong network effects and scale these two platforms merged in to create an even larger and stronger platform: Upwork.
Toptal creates value for both sides of the market by addressing a weakness in the established marketplaces. This created a vicious circle where prices got even lower as these freelancers left, creating a reputation for low-cost outsourcing work on these platforms. While other platforms are open for all freelancers to sign-up, the company has a rigorous freelancer selection process which includes online exercises and interviews. As popposed to other marketplaces, the matching process is human-driven and not automated.
Toptal reaches out to companies who want to list a project in order to understand their needs and match them with what they see as the most appropriate freelancer. This model allows Toptal to not only have a high average transaction value but also to capture a higher commission rate than its competitors. First, its manual matching processes comes with operational complexity and is not as scalable as the fully automated matching model.
Second, a significant part of the online staffing market growth is going to be driven by large enterprise. Great post, thank you! Agree with you that TopTal faces significant challenges. There seems to be significant potential for disintermediation for these temporary project-based worker platforms. Or will most of these workers choose the flexibility of freelancing and multihomingand forego the benefits of working at one firm in-house?
Thanks very much Erik for your comment. Great point — disintermediation is a big challenge for these platforms. One interesting approach that Upwork a competitor is trying is tiered-pricing: The company takes a higher commission on the first projects than on the later ones. But in general, in order to avoid disintermediation, the platforms need to create value through things like dispute resolution, risk transfer, quality assurance, etc.

We live in a material world, in that we rely on materials to make our lives better. Without even realizing it, humans consume enormous amounts of metals and minerals with every convenient food package, impressive building, and technological innovation. Every year, the United States Geological Service USGS publishes commodity summaries outlining global mining statistics for over 90 individual minerals and materials.
Non-fuel minerals are those not used for fuel, such as oil, natural gas and coal. Once non-fuel minerals are used up, there is no replacing them. However, many can be recycled continuously. The USGS tracked both refinery and mine production of these various minerals. This means that some minerals are the essential ingredients for others on the list.Apkpure game hacker
For example, iron ore is critical for steel production, and bauxite ore gets refined into aluminum. These materials fertilize the food we eat, and they also form the structures we live in and the roads we drive on. They are the bones of the global economy.Maytag refrigerator bottom freezer leaking water
While cement, sand, and gravel may be the bones of global infrastructure, base metals are its lifeblood. Their consumption is an important indicator of the overall health of an economy. Base metals are non-ferrous, meaning they contain no iron. They are often more abundant in nature and sometimes easier to mine, so their prices are generally lower than precious metals. Base metals are also the critical materials that will help to deliver a green and renewable future. The electrification of everything will require vast amounts of base metals to make everything from batteries to solar cells work.
While metals form the structure and veins of the global economy, ultimately it is humans and animals that make the flesh of the world, driving consumption patterns. On average, each human uses more than 13 metric tons of materials per year.
Half of the total comprises sand, clay, gravel, and cement used for building, along with the other minerals mined to produce fertilizer. The final quarter are plants and trees used for food and fuel.
